  • Mullaperiyar dam issue is the hot news being discuused now a days. The row between Kerala and TamilNadu continues over the dam with each party contradicting other. My personal opinion is to build a new dam because the existing dam is more than 136 years old and it may not withstand the huge gush of water. The verdict of Tamil Nadu government that the dam is not weak is wrong. The only thing they want is the water to irrigate their regions at the cost of lakhs of people.Kerala government had agreed to give the same amount of water if they are constructing the new dam stilll i dont understand why Tamil Nadu is not agreeing to that. One thing they have to keep in mind that not only Keralites are living in kerala but also a lot of tamilians. So this should not be taken as a regional issue but as a social issue to save the lives of common people.
What to do when Mullaperiyar dam breaks? (let's hope it does not happen). The entire water will rush to nearby Idukki dam and idukki dam will not be able to withstand the heavy rush of water and eventually breaks and the raging water will engulf the four nearby districts. So what people should do save themselves?I have found a number of solutions to escape when mullaperiyar dam bursts in facebook,I am sharing onesolution shared by my friend on FB.Here it goes

"What to do when Mullaperiyar/Idukki Dam bursts? For people in Cochin and nearby areas, there would be a time gap of 3 hours before the water reaches the city limits. The water reaching with full force towards the city would be around 20-25 feet high. The first 2-3 minutes holds the key to surviving the speeding water. After 5-10 minutes the force of the water ...flow decreases and within an hour and a half, the water level subsides. The main route the water will flow is via the Periyar River. People living near the river side can find a safe spot by travelling towards Thrissur. Those living near Aluva, Kalamassery, Edapally can find a safe spot by travelling towards Kattor, Iringalakkuda, Peraambra or Kodakara. But it is better to travel towards Thrissur. People living near Vytilla, Fort Kochi and Ernakulam can find a safe spot by travelling towards Aleppey and people living near Trivandrum can find a safe spot by travelling towards Aleppey or Kuttanadu. Carpooling will be an effective method to save more lives because every life is important. It is best to drive in a single line. With panic rising, there is a huge chance for people to drive haphazardly and traffic to slow down. If you find yourself stuck in traffic with no tall building within vicinity for escape, stay in the car, while keeping the engine running and completely closing all the windows. Reason being that even when you car in underwater, there would be lesser chance for the water to seep into the car when engine running this might help u survive the first first 2-3 mins of heavy force of water. Boarding a train might be a good idea and flight is a big NO because the airport is close to Periyar River. Those who cannot get vehicles should try to get on top of buildings - flats, the Kaloor stadium or the gallery stand should be reasonable safe. Although the stadium is not so tall, its construction is such that the water will take more time to get inside its complex structure. The newly constructed Lulu mall should also be safe with its complex construction. People in remote and coastal areas should try getting on top of hills, get on to boats or swim 1-2 km into the sea with inflated tubes or life jackets. Avoid flats with parking areas on the ground floor. As they stand on pillars (made of hollow bricks) the force of water and debris that it collects on the way can make it collapse. If you are stuck at home, empty syntax tanks or refrigerators and stay inside; these things will float and can absorb shock up to an extent. If you have old tyres, tie it to something strong and tie yourself to the tyre. Stay away from petrol pumps and gas stations..... Always hav an emergency kit ready with u. While evacuating pls make sure to lend a helping hand to who ever in need. Just remembr tht evry life is worth it..!! plz add on points if u have and share it"

Before come up with a resolution for this issue, the authorities should have to think beyond the borders of both the states. There must be an acceptable solution for all the people across Kerala and TN.

There is no need to stick on Britishers' agreement which was completely void after we packed off from India. The situations have been changed a lot and demand for water in Kerala also has increased drastically. There are many places in Kerala lacking of good water resources. This does mean that the utilization of water should be wise, beneficial to everyone and shouldn't threaten to anyone's life or dream.

For taking such resolution we must need visionary, genuine, strong leaders at central ministry or in supreme power who can think beyond all the facts and come up with a resolution. But unfortunately we don't have anyone with a straight backbone!! Even if someone come forward, the current system will not allow him to raise his voice.

Ultimately things will go on like this and media will shift the focus when they get another sensational matter. After many months or years, one day the dam will collapse and disaster will happen and will millions of people and wildlife will be destroyed from earth. This will put in the world history as "World's Worst Dam Disaster".
