Seminar on Body Area Network Abstract
A Wireless Body Area Network consists of a set of mobile and compact intercommunicating sensors, either wearable or implanted into the human body which monitor vital body parameters and movements such as heart rate, blood pressure, temperature etc. These devices, communicating through wireless technologies, transmit data from the body to a home base station, from where the data can be forwarded to a hospital, clinic or elsewhere in real time over a local areanetwork (LAN), wide area network (WAN),cellular network. So physicians can access this data and recommend the necessary actions.WBAN is still in its primitive stage and is being widely researched.Burgeoning healthcare needs are exerting enormous strain on the fragile healthcare deliverysystem.Shortage of skilled staff, overload, and tightening of healthcare budgets have aggravated the impending healthcare crisis. These economical, social, and demographictrends highlight the need to exploit technological breakthroughs to bring affordable and efficient healthcare solutions to people that will improve their quality of life. The technology expected to be a breakthrough invention in healthcare, leading to concepts like telemedicine and mHealth becoming real.In short Body Area Network is a system of devices in close proximity to a persons body that cooperate for the benefit of the user.
Recent advances in the domain of personal gadgets, sensing and monitoring technology for in-body and near-body use, miniaturization, and energy-efficient wireless and sensor networks have recently come together under the rubric of Wireless Body Area Networks (WBAN). Body Area Networks, as the name suggests, is a network of computing entities around a person that is used to provide important services. WBANs can be utilized in diverse applications such as physiological and medical monitoring, human computer interaction, education and entertainment. Examples include heart-rate monitors, glucose-monitors, accelerometers, medical implants and so on. WBAN is consists of several small devices close to, attached to or implanted into the human body. These devices communicate by means of a wireless network. WBAN topology comprises many transmit only sensor nodes, that have to be very simple, low cost and extremely energy efficient, some transceiver nodes, that afford a somewhat higher complexity to sense and act and few high capability nodes, e.g. master nodes with high computational capabilities and support for higher data rates. The gathered datacan be forwarded in real time to a hospital, clinic, or central repository over a local area network (LAN), wide area network WAN),cellular network, and the like. Physicians and caregivers can remotely access this data
